Third Thursdays - Educational Forum

FREE Seminar Here, FREE Seminar There FREE Seminars Everywhere!

"Free" Estate Planning Seminars verses Educational Forums, there is almost always a difference. In this article, I hope to explain the distinctions.

I have served clients as an Estate Planning Attorney preparing Wills, Trusts and Advanced Health Care Directives for over 22 years. During this time, numerous clients have called me and asked about "Free" Seminar advertisements that they have received in the mail.

Sometimes these "Free" seminars come with a "Free" dinner or lunch. The flyers almost always have some sensualized reference to horrors of probate or draconian changes in the law that can ruin a family without immediate action.

Although I have attended only a few of these "Free" seminars, I feel confident that the majority are not what I would consider Educational Forums.

Good estate planning attorneys enjoy teaching. I believe there is a difference between teaching individuals about estate planning and selling an estate plan. I have met with many people who at the "Free" seminar wrote out a very large check to purchase their estate plan during the actual seminar. No meeting. No educating.

Being educated about your estate plan, is critical to achieving the goals of a proper estate plan.

Throughout 2018, the law offices of Barney McKenna and Olmstead will offer a monthly Estate Planning Educational Forum every Third Thursday. The setting will be 10 to 12 participants. Because the forum will be small, individual questions will be encouraged.

In 2018, the forums will address basic concepts related to Wills, Trusts and Health Care documents. Additionally, the timely topics of Pet Trusts, IRA Planning and Utah's Asset Protection Trust statute will be addressed.

The next Third Thursday Forum will be June 21st at the Law Offices of Barney McKenna and Olmstead 43 S. 100 E., Suite 300, from 5pm to 6pm. Although there is no charge, a prior reservation is required. You can call 628-1711 to make a reservation. This Educational Forum is co-sponsored by Metcalf Mortuary.

There will be no "free" dinner and nothing will be sold, but after the forum you will leave more educated about your current and future estate planning goals.
